Why are advanced Facilitation Skills so important
for Managers, Trainers & Consultants?

Today the requirement of business efficiency demands a reduction of the time people spend in training and meetings. At the same time group performances are required to be more effective and innovative. In project, process and matrix organisations people are working, learning and improving together. As a part of the culture and strength of an organisation, group work techniques are essential for the daily performance of these teams. Traditional meetings are often inefficient discussions or one-way-presentations. Managers, Trainers & Consultants are in the role to facilitate group work, however, a facilitation process is often missing or applied inconsistently.

Moderation
- how does it work, what's the business outcome?

Moderation (latin: moderare - to moderate, to steer, to regulate) is both a philosophy and a method of interactive working and learning with and in groups. Main instrument is the visualisation of every working step with the use of coloured cards, pinboards, brown paper and other visual aids. The neutral facilitator (moderator) guides the group through a clear structured and creative process.

The Moderation method especially applies in sensitive and difficult situations. Typical applications are:

  1. SWOT-analysis
  2. Strategic planning
  3. Partnering workshops
  4. Problem solving
  5. Conflict resolution
  6. Action planning
  7. Implementation of management systems
  8. Change of culture and organisation
  9. Developing workplace teams
  10. Generating ideas

The major benefits of Moderation are:

  1. Sustainable outcome can be achieved in a short time
  2. Breadth and depth of exploration brings all relevant issues on the table

  1. Moderation accommodates all workplace cultures
  2. All group members participate in the same way regardless their positions
  3. High commitment and ownership of all group members to decisions and outcome
  4. Walk the talk process for learning organisations

With Moderation as a training method, knowledge and information can be delivered in an activating way and learning experiences can debriefed and shared. Moderation can be incorporated in any organisational development or performance improvement program. People enjoy moderation as a very active working process and are very motivated to contribute to the content.

An example of a program we delivered recently*

The "Moderation" program consists of two modules - Moderation basic and Moderation advanced. In the Moderation basic course (3 days) participants learn the individual techniques of Moderation and practise them in various sessions. In the Moderation advanced workshop (3-4 days) the participants, who all have previously attended the moderation basic program, have the opportunity to practice the techniques in more depth and learn from a very practical experience in a real business environment.

The key part of this program is the facilitation of a “real” conference for a “real client” by the participants with coaching from our experienced facilitators. The participants experience all stages of a project using the moderation system, including the briefing from the client, the planning of the sessions, the facilitation of a one or two day event as well as and the debriefing of the learning experience.

Both workshops are highly participative. We model the processes along the way Therefore participants not only see Moderation as the content of this program they also experience Moderation as the learning and working process.
